Gas and electric oven repair
Cakes burnt on one side, a door that will not close or an oven that switches itself off? A local technician comes to your home, tests the oven and explains the fix before any work starts.
Open a question to see the usual causes and a quick check you can safely do yourself. If it does not help, call us and tell us what you found.
An element with a weak spot heats only part of the oven, so one side or the bottom cooks faster.
If the fan at the back stops or slows, hot air no longer moves around and the heat stays near the element.
A sensor that reads low makes the oven run hotter than the setting, and a high reading does the opposite.
Put an oven thermometer in the middle rack and preheat to 350°F. If it reads more than 25°F off after 20 minutes, call us. Also check that pans are not blocking the airflow.
Hinge springs weaken over time, and the door drops open or will not pull tight against the frame.
A torn or flattened gasket leaves a gap where heat escapes and the door feels loose.
If the door was leaned on or knocked, the slots the hinges sit in can bend and hold the door crooked.
Open the door and look at the gasket for tears or loose sections. Check that nothing on the bottom edge is stopping the door. Do not lean on the open door to test it.
The fan that cools the electronics runs during baking. If it stops, the oven overheats and a safety cut-off turns it off.
A sensor that reads too hot tells the control the oven is overheating, and it shuts down.
A worn relay on the board can drop out partway through baking and cut the heat.
Check that the timer or Sabbath mode is not set and that the oven vent is not covered. Note how long it runs before it shuts off and tell us when you call.
Spills that burn on the bottom of the oven are the most common cause of smoke and smell.
A bake element that blisters or splits can spark and smoke. Turn the oven off if you see a bright spot.
If the vent is covered by a pan or foil, smoke and heat build up inside instead of escaping.
Let the oven cool and wipe up spills on the floor. Remove any foil from the bottom. If you see sparks or a glowing spot on the element, switch the oven off at the breaker and call us.
Smell gas?
Do not touch light switches or appliances and do not try to find the leak. Leave the house, then call the Enbridge Gas emergency line at 1-866-763-5427 or 911 from outside. Call us for the repair only after the gas supply has been made safe.
