Gas and electric dryer repair
Clothes still damp, a dryer that stops when you let go of Start or a Check Vent light? A local technician comes to your home, tests the dryer and explains the fix before any work starts.
Open a question to see the usual causes and a quick check you can safely do yourself. If it does not help, call us and tell us what you found.
A switch inside the motor moves the dryer from start to run. When it wears, the motor only turns while you hold the button.
A worn button or a cracked contact behind it can lose the signal as soon as you release it.
A motor that struggles to get up to speed may hum, start slowly and stop again once the button is released.
Empty the drum and try again. If it runs empty but stops with a load, a slipping belt or a weak motor is likely. If it stops either way, call us.
A torn felt seal at the front or back of the drum lets lint and dust escape and can leave dark lines on clothes.
When the plastic glides wear through, the drum rubs on metal and leaves grey marks on fabric.
Lint packed below the screen is blown back into the drum and lands on the next load.
Pull out the lint screen and vacuum the slot below it. Look inside the drum edges for torn felt or loose bits of fabric.
A broken coil that touches the heater housing shorts to ground and trips the breaker as soon as the heat comes on.
A loose or burned connection where the cord meets the dryer overheats and trips the circuit.
A motor with worn windings draws too much current and can trip the breaker on start-up.
Reset the breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us. Do not keep resetting it, and do not open the back panel yourself.
Lint built up in the vent run slows the airflow, so the dryer runs hotter and warns you before it overheats.
A flexible duct squashed when the dryer was pushed back against the wall blocks the air just like a clogged vent.
If the vent is clear, a sensor that reads too hot can trigger the alert on its own.
Clean the lint screen, then go outside and check that the vent flap opens and air blows out while the dryer runs. Make sure the hose behind the dryer is not bent flat.
Smell gas?
Do not touch light switches or appliances and do not try to find the leak. Leave the house, then call the Enbridge Gas emergency line at 1-866-763-5427 or 911 from outside. Call us for the repair only after the gas supply has been made safe.
Something else going on with your dryer? Describe it on the phone and we will tell you what to check first.
